In 2024, the competition for admission to the most popular universities in the US remains intense. Yale University received a record 57,512 applications, New York University had 118,000 applications, and Northeastern University saw 98,373 applications, among others. Dartmouth College and several other schools also reported a record number of early applications. Due to the large number of applicants, the acceptance rates at top universities continue to decline. This has led schools to place more students on waitlists to ensure a high enrollment rate.

Once again, we emphasize the importance of standardized tests (SAT/ACT, AP). Following the reinstatement of the requirement to submit standardized test scores by schools like MIT, Yale, Brown, Dartmouth, and Georgetown, Harvard University, Caltech, and Cornell University have also recently announced that they will reintroduce the requirement for students to submit SAT or ACT scores. This policy reversal comes after universities made standardized tests optional in June 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a letter to the Harvard community, Hopi Hoekstra, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, emphasized the “many factors” behind this decision. “Standardized tests provide a means to assess all students, regardless of their background and life experiences, and offer information that predicts success in college and beyond,” she said. “In fact, when students can choose not to submit test scores, they may withhold some information that could be beneficial when the admissions committee interprets their application according to local school norms. In short, more information, especially highly predictive information like this, is valuable in identifying talent across the socioeconomic spectrum.”

While most schools still maintain a test-optional policy, it is important to remember that test-optional does not mean test-blind. Although most schools do not require students to submit standardized test scores, it has been proven that high test scores can certainly be a significant advantage. We recommend that students who can take these exams should seize this opportunity to strengthen their applications.

Student JW has been receiving guidance from Mr. Sun since the 9th grade. His perfect academic and standardized test scores have made him a strong contender among applicants to top-tier universities. In 11th grade, while working as a counselor at our summer camp and as a teaching assistant in the SAT prep class, we observed that JW possesses many excellent qualities. He is proactive, kind, and sincere, and many parents have told us that their children greatly enjoy working with him. Although JW and his parents would have been satisfied with an early acceptance to Cornell University, under Mr. Sun’s advice and encouragement, they ambitiously applied to Princeton University. The family placed great trust in Mr. Sun and worked tirelessly to perfect the application materials. Ultimately, JW successfully received an admission offer from Princeton University.

Student Testimonials

I would like to thank Mr. Sun for all his invaluable support throughout the college application process. Mr. Sun was always passionate and dedicated about helping me out, encouraging me to pursue my dream schools. Our regular checks-ins helped me stay on task with my college research and essay writing. Mr. Sun spent a lot of time and effort in guiding me through understanding each college’s distinct characteristics, brainstorming essay themes, offering constructive feedback, and meticulously proofreading my drafts. Moreover, anytime I had miscellaneous questions, Mr. Sun was promptly available to provide me with guidance. Without Mr. Sun’s support, I wouldn’t have been able to realize my aspirations of attending my dream school. Thank you, Mr. Sun, for your unwavering support and guidance throughout this journey!

Under Mr. Sun's planning and guidance, JW was able to secure admission to his dream school, a result that far exceeded our initial expectations. Both Mr. Sun and Ms. Liu deserve significant credit for this achievement. We are not tiger parents and do not wish to pressure our child into prestigious schools through extreme methods. After attending several of Mr. Sun's public lectures on school applications, we strongly agreed with his educational philosophy. Mr. Sun advocates for doing what needs to be done and letting things take their natural course, without the need to pursue scientific competitions, sports, research, or famous summer schools excessively. This approach allowed JW to maintain a relatively calm mindset throughout high school, and we, as parents, avoided the anxiety of blindly following trends. Mr. Sun has extensive experience in course selection. He helped plan JW's courses throughout high school, ensuring that the content and difficulty matched the university major he intended to apply for. Starting from the summer of 11th grade, Mr. Sun met with JW weekly, providing comprehensive guidance on school selection, essays, recommendation letters, and more. This gradual and methodical approach proved highly effective, distributing the extensive essay work evenly over more than 20 weeks, allowing JW to follow the schedule step-by-step and complete quality essays before the deadlines. Mr. Sun's work is extremely meticulous and responsible; he is articulate, well-rounded, quick-thinking, and steady. Often, when JW hit a bottleneck, Mr. Sun's concise advice would help him find a new path and alleviate his anxiety. We firmly believe in entrusting professional matters to professionals. Throughout our collaboration with Mr. Sun, we adhered to this principle, trusted his judgment and direction, and followed his advice after understanding his reasoning. The collaboration was very pleasant. Ms. Liu also provided us with many insights, helping us better understand the admission standards of prestigious universities. She encouraged us to boldly apply to Ivy League schools when we were unsure, which ultimately led to our successful outcome. We are very fortunate to have met Mr. Sun and Ms. Liu during the application process. JW's admission to his dream school is inseparable from the long-term, meticulous guidance and assistance of these two teachers.

ML began receiving guidance from Dr. Sun in tenth grade. Under Dr. Sun’s guidance, he quickly flourished in high school. With the active support of his parents, he made significant strides. ML excelled in his academic interests and extracurricular pursuits, standing out among his peers. Throughout the entire application process, ML actively communicated with Dr. Sun and wholeheartedly embraced his advice. The cooperative atmosphere during the application process led to results that exceeded expectations.

I met Sun Laoshi my sophomore year and from the first day, I knew we’d connect really well. That’s because we share the same goal-oriented mindset. Sun Laoshi is a very straightforward mentor who uses his experience to forge a clear, direct path for students to follow. He helped me navigate the college application process by setting deadlines, goals/objectives, and different options to choose from. However, what strikes me the most is Sun Laoshi’s authentic, honest and straightforward work habit. He paints a realistic picture of where the student is at and then crafts a detailed plan to follow. His optimism also helped me gain a better understanding of my own potential as well. There were many times where I doubted my capabilities within the application process, but Sun Laoshi was there to help me and provided me with realistic and optimistic feedback to help strengthen my confidence. He pushes you to strive for the best, no matter where you are, academically or outside the classroom. In the end, I knew I could trust Sun Laoshi because of his realistic approach. If there is something Sun Laoshi recommends, he will say it immediately. He does not circle around, and he will directly inform you where to correct your essays, when to get it done by, and how to build a better application overall. In the end, from start to finish, Sun Laoshi helped me mold my application by adapting my unique experiences into my story. He is able to understand where a student is and help them move forward while always maintaining an optimistic attitude. I am forever grateful for Sun Laoshi and the Ace Education Team, as they changed my life forever and showed me what I am capable of.

As a father, I know my son so well. I truly believe he can handle things by himself. After 2 years of preparation and consulting with Sun Laoshi, I decided to keep my hands off my son’s college application because I truly trust Sun Laoshi’s guidance and experience. I did not attend the weekly consultation meetings, and I did not look at what my son wrote on his essays. I trusted the process until the end, and the results my son received are overwhelming. I am so grateful for Sun Laoshi’s help and dedication. He changes lives, and knows how to identify and tell wonderful stories.
